Raising Baby is Alliance of Moms’ flagship event. It’s a fun day of interactive, educational parenting workshops for LA’s pregnant and parenting foster youth.

The day is attended by over 50 young moms ranging in age from 14-23 years old who come to us through the foster care system and probation department. At Raising Baby, we aim to educate them on the importance of early brain development. We also strive to empower these young parents in foster care to become the kind of parents they want to be but never had themselves.

Research tells us that more than 80% of a person’s brain development is completed by the age of three. We also know that children from lower income families will have heard 30 million fewer words by this age than three year olds from higher income families. This disparity can have a lasting impact on their lives. To help overturn statistics like these, we bring in experts who break down the latest science on brain development. They present it in a way that is relevant and accessible so that the teens leave feeling confident, armed with tips and tools to help build their babies’ brains. Past Raising Baby workshops have included Ready, Set, Read; Developmental Play; Calm Mama, Happy Baby; and The Postpartum Shift.

One of the most inspiring things about the day is seeing the youth find support amongst their peers. In workshops, they are able to share their challenges with one another as they learn that they are not alone in their fears, concerns and struggles. This validation and reassurance is something all parents need.

While the young parents learn, over 100 Alliance of Moms members volunteer, interacting directly with the vulnerable population we serve. Our volunteer “Helpers” stay with the same young mom all day to assist her in any way. We always want all of our girls to feel supported and know that Raising Baby is about them.

At the end of the day, every young mom leaves with a goody bag full of brand new items for her whole family to enjoy. We could not do this without the generosity of our sponsors and donors including CuddleBright, Munchkin, Ergobaby, Mini Maven, The Honest Company, SkipHop, Sollybaby, and Smashbox, to name a few. We are also so grateful to the Children’s Institute, Inc., Project Fatherhood, Too Small to Fail, The Book Foundation, Outside the Box, The Cradle Company, LOOM, and many more who help to make this event possible.
