Programs & Resources

With a drive to do more, the Alliance of Moms launched with a vision to support pregnant and parenting teens in foster care—from a group of moms who each experienced their own personal journeys and dedicated themselves to volunteering and offering more hands-on support to facilitate better outcomes for young families in LA’s foster care system.

Education, with a focus on early brain development, became an integral piece of our programming. With 80% of the brain developed by age 3, we knew that if these young families had access to these resources and early interventions, they had a much better chance of improving and thriving.

Together, as a community of moms for moms, AOM has launched a parenting movement with the goal of shattering stigma, promoting hope and opportunity, and changing the trajectory for each of the families we serve—realizing the potential for a bright future as teen parents—for themselves, their babies and the entire family.

Parenting Education, Wellness, and Early Brain Development

  • Developmental Milestones

With a focus on educating young parents about early brain development, Watch My Baby Grow! is an Alliance-created month-by-month guide and checklist to help our clients monitor their child’s development.

  • Day of Wellness

A Day of Wellness features expert-led interactive and intimate workshops and activities focused on self care, self esteem, and reproductive health for expectant and parenting youth. Invited speakers share strategies and practices young parents can use to maximize their own mental and physical health.

  • Raising Baby

AOM’s flagship event, Raising Baby is an engaging day of interactive and educational workshops that focus on early brain development to support our clients as they navigate the first five years of raising their children. Young moms come to learn new skills for parenting and connect in community with other mothers.

Far too often, parenting youth in foster care experience food and resource insecurity. With help from partners and volunteers, AOM provides emergency essentials—diapers, wipes, formula, toiletries, and other baby supplies—for our young parenting clients to make sure they have what they need to care for their children.

Essentials when they need them most.

Systemic Solutions

The Alliance also works to change systems and policies to address the racial inequities that prevent young parents in foster care from succeeding and thriving.

2021 Policy Victories:

  • Supporting Pregnant Youth in Foster Care
$1.8 million to provide an expectant parent supplement three months prior to the expected birth of a child to support expectant youth.

Our Current Legislative Priorities:

  • Supporting Youth in Extended Foster Care
AB 2189 (Friedman) expands eligibility for the expectant parent benefit to include minors and nonminor dependents (NMDs) who are transitioning between placements and prevents courts from exiting NMDs from Extended Foster Care if certain transitional independent living plan resources and services have not been provided to the NMD including housing transition planning.

Training Service Providers:

The Alliance also hosts webinars about supportive services for EPY, such as our latest Improving Outcomes for Expectant and Parenting Youth in Foster Care.
